Spiderman 3 further develops Peter Parker’s (played by Tobey Maguire) story, and the plot tends to center on the battle that takes place in his soul, everything else evolving around his character. Things seem to be going very well for Peter: the people of New York now love Spiderman, Mary Jane (played by Kirsten Dunst) loves him more than ever, and he’s just about to get a full time job at the Daily Bugle. But things will start going down hill very fast, when Peter is taken over by a black alien substance, which amplifies his powers, but also brings out all his negative traits.
On the negative characters plan, we see the development of Harry Osborn (played by James Franco), who becomes the new Goblin, holding Spiderman responsible for his father’s death. Next, Flint Marko, who turns out to be Uncle Ben’s real killer, is transformed into the Sandman. Spiderman finally manages to free himself from the black substance, but this entitiy soon infects Eddie Brock, who will become Venom. So now Spidey has to face three deadly enemies, and the movie keeps you wondering until the last second if he’s going to come out alive. But, as the plot twists and turns, things lighten up. Harry turns to the good side, and helps Peter to defeat the Sandman and sacrifices himself in the fight against Venom, showing a true act of bravery and friendship. The movie ends with Peter and Jane slowly dancing, as the image fades away.
Out of all the series, I think that Spiderman 3 is the one which can be called a masterpiece. I for one liked absolutely everything about it. The movie takes time to develop each character separately, which is a great thing, as we enter the characters minds. And, to add to this, the actors give their best performances, even better than the previous two movies. What is more, the movie manages to blend drama, action and comedy perfectly. I was laughing one moment, almost crying the next, and gasping my hands later on, wondering what would happen next, how would Spidey get out of that situation, and this is what a good movie should be able to do to its audience.
On the whole, Spiderman 3 has shown all the signs of becoming this summer’s blockbuster, and, quite frankly, it’s managed to leave me hoping that they will decide to make Spiderman 4 too.
